We had a chat for third grade parents about how to raise responsible kids, and since esposbility is the value of the month, so it came in very handy. Parents were very interested, and asked many questions;also, we had the student's videos, which were very nice.
One of the things that were explained in the chat is the importance of household chores for kids, to grow in responsibility. We can start since they are very young with something very simple, like asking the 1 1/2 year old toddler to take his diaper to the trash can. The chore has to be according to our knowledge of the child, his/her age, temperament, etc. It is good to explain the child how to carry out the chore; in other words, we have to give him the what, the how, and of course the why.
Motivating kids to do their chores is very important. Don't think that you can reward kids only with material things; for example, if the child has accomplished to set the table for dinner every day of the week, an idea of a reward may be choosing the meal or dessert for Saturday. In this way, as you can see, the consequence is closely related to the action. Parents make kids feel important when they trust them a parcel of the household as their responsibility. also, Giving them reminders to fulfill a chore is all right.
Here is a video where some kids impersonate the ideal of responsibility. Enjoy!
