Today we are starting to develop Unit Four from the Lions-Quest Program. This unit is intended to strengthen the protective factors in young people, and on the contrary, to reduce the risk of adopting harmful behaviors. The lessons will focus in helping kids gain the skills needed to grow up healthy and drug-free, as well as the knowledge of how valuable and wonderful our bodies are.
Students:
This work is intended for B sections only. You will find below some information about your class’ lesson of the day, as well as an activity for you to do as homework.
FIRST GRADE
"The human body is fascinating! we are going to learn some basic things about the human body, so that we can develop responsibility for caring for it.
The term "healthy" means to be well and strong. Taking care of our budies is a big job. Sometimes we can do this alone and sometimes we need other people's help.
Activities
1. Answer these questions:
* How does a parent help you be healthy?
* How does a doctor help you be healthy?
* How does the school nurse help you be healthy?
* How does Mrs. K. help you be healthy?
2. Watch this video of the TV program HI5, and see what a healthy body is capable of doing!
3. Get a blank sheet of paper and draw a fun way to get some exercise.
4. Please, turn in your paper to Mrs. K., tomorrow.
SECOND GRADE
We are all responsible for protecting our own health and avoiding actions that can hurt ourselves or other people. For children, this responsibility is shared with their families.
A habit is something that a person does so often that he/she doesn't even think about it. Habits may be healthy or unhealthy.
Some things become unhealthy only when we do them too much. For example, watching a favorite program on TV for a half hour is ok, but watching TV all afternoon may be too much.
Can you think of some healthy habits to take care of your body? Watch the following video about brushing your teeth!
On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following questions:
* What would you do if you found something that might be poison?
* What do you do when you sneeze?
* What do you do with your hands just before you eat?
* Name two healthy habits
* Name two unhealthy habits
* Do you think that eating a chocolate ocassionally is OK? What about eating five
in a row?
* Draw a picture about a way you take good care of your health
Please, turn in your paper to Mrs.Love, tomorrow
FIFTH GRADE
Think about this: When someone drops in a pebble to the surface of the water, concentric circles begin to form; in other words, it causes waves or ripples that go out in circles from the pebble.
This is called the "ripple effect". Just as the ripples caused by the pebble can reach far out, our actions can also reach far, affecting not only ourselves, but our family, friends, and school as well.
Here is an example of a ripple effect; it is about a student who decides to make new friends at school:

There are also some things people do that lead to negative results not only for themselves, but also for others; for example, cheat on tests, break promises, smoke cigarrettes, get into drugs or alcohol, etc.
think about this: What sort of ripple effect a person who uses drugs might cause?
People who take drugs think that using drugs will make them fit in,or use them because their friends do. Others take them to forget about problems or to try something new. The truth is that drugs really hurt them.
On a separate sheet of paper:
1. think of something you did that had a positive effect on others. Describe the "ripple effect" of this action on yoursef and others. Draw the ripple effect and its description: effect on you, effect on family, effect on friends, effect on other people.
2. What would you say to someone who says, "It's no one elses business wether or not I use drugs.
