December 2,2009

During the month of December, elementary kids will be working with the concept of decision making. Children will be led to understand that trusted adults at home and at school offer safe choices, and that it is very important that thay learn the difference between a harmful and a helpful decision.

We, as parents need to begin teaching children about how to make positive decisions, when they're still young. they need to develop skills like not letting others influence their decisions, considering the consequences of their actions.

The best way to achieve this goal is for parents to set some clear limits for our kids, so that they know which things are recommended to do, and which aren't. Within these limits, we can give positive choices to kids, with the purpose for them to experience the connection between the decisions they make and the consequences that follow.

Allow your kids to make small decisions at home, so that they practice under your guidance. Make them ponder about the consequences their choices bring to them; praise them effusively for their right choices and guide them to see how they can improve or change things' outcome next time: your child is learning by experience from his/her mistakes. Do not do make decisions for them, when they can take them, even if it is easier or more comfortable.

Now that Christmas is coming you may find many wonderful opportunities to let your child decide or help you decide, for example, where to put the Nativity scene, what to give Grandpa for Christmas, or what to wear on that night.

School is preparing to celebrate our traditional "Posadas", and the air is filled with excitement about the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ! Also, we are collecting sweaters and blankets for the poor, and helping the "Asociación para ayudar a los que padecen el sídrome del Alzheimer" I am sure that you can find many ways at home for your child to pactice random acts of kindness.
